Bonsai Sensation Nursery is a small family business established in 2001. From a humble beginning of growing a few bonsai in a suburban backyard, to having stocked well over 20,000 trees on one acre. And they continue to grow!

They pride themselves in developing quality bonsai materials from the ground up. Firstly, every tree is root-pruned regularly to develop fine nebari (surface root). Followed by wiring and bending of the trunk to set the desired trunkline early in its development, then sacrifice branches are encouraged and allowed to grow to thicken the trunk. Followed by the removal of heavy top growth, replacing with a finer leader to introduce taper into the trunkline and branch structures. Those steps are repeated to ensure that every tree the customers purchased from us, have the potential to be better bonsai, not bigger bonsai!

The Gold Coast Tweed Bonsai Club is an incorporated club of Queensland, but it wasn’t always that way. Neither was it a Queensland club. It was actually inaugurated in March 1983 in the CWA hall, Tweed Heads NSW and it had 10 members. At that time it was known as the Tweed border bonsai group.

The club’s meeting place changed many times over the years and it had 40 members when it finally moved to Queensland, meeting at the CWA hall, Currumbin creek. When the club was incorporated its name was officially changed to the Gold Coast Tweed Bonsai Club Inc.

The mission of the club is as follows:

1. To promote the art of bonsai and the cultivation of potted plants known as “Bonsai” in all of its forms.
2. To hold or arrange displays or showings of Bonsai by members for private and/or public viewing.
3. To arrange for and hold Lectures, Demonstrations and/or classes for instruction of members in the art.
4. To do all such other things conductive to the attainment of the groups objectives.

The Gold Coast Tweed bonsai club offers a good learning environment for bonsai people of all skill levels. Their passion is bonsai art and they want to learn everything there is to know about it. They are a non-profit organization and are there to help the people of the gold coast tweed region to a better understanding and knowledge of bonsai art, bonsai trees, bonsai tools and bonsai gardens.

The Bonsai Workshop was formed in the late 1980′s by a small group of dedicated Bonsai enthusiasts. Although they where members of the Western Australia Bonsai Society, they felt the need to develop a different approach to their hobby. The Workshop’s objectives where to foster and stimulate interest in the culture of Bonsai, whilst educating interested people in the art of Bonsai.

The vision for the Bonsai Workshop’s future is to continue with the foundation philosophy, to foster and stimulate interest in the culture and development of the art of Bonsai in a ‘hands on’ approach, and the sharing of knowledge in a workshop format.

The Bonsai Workshop will regularly invite Bonsai experts to Perth, so that members can continue to improve their own skills and knowledge of Bonsai. The club is striving to have trees at the ultimate Japanese Standard.

The Bonsai Society of Sydney was formed in 1999 by a group of Megumi Bennett’s bonsai students and was known Megumi’s Bonsai Kai. In 2001, the group held its first public exhibition and in 2002 became a Member of the Association of Australian Bonsai Clubs (AABC) and the Bonsai Federation of Australia (BFA).

Membership continued to grow and the name no longer seemed appropriate so after much thought and discussion, the group become the Bonsai Society of Sydney Inc in 2004. The group made a significant contribution to Bonsai in Australia by hosting the 18th AABC National Bonsai Convention held at Sydney Olympic Park in 2005. From a small group of Megumi’s students the Society has grown to boast some 125 members in 2010 and has elected representatives on both the AABC and BFA.

A varied program is put together each year by the Society’s Committee.  Its consists of guest speakers, workshops and demonstrations.  The demonstrations are given by both members and invited bonsai artists.

A number of social events are organised each year.  This include such things as: bus trips to visit other Club exhibitions, botanical gardens and special workshops; end of the year lunch; and anything else the committee can organise to meet the Society’s needs.

A visit to Cowra just isn’t complete without a visit to the Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre.  Opened in 1979, this multi award winning Garden is a ‘must’ see at any time of the year, whether you are on your first visit to Cowra or your fiftieth.

Ken Nakajima, created the Kaiyushiki (strolling) garden, which is designed to embody the entire landscape of Japan, where every bend takes the visitor on a voyage of discovery.

The striking hill representing Mt Fuji, manicured hedges cascading across the garden like rolling hills, streams flowing like rivers and ponds glistening like inland lakes and the sea – ponder a moment or feed the Koi.

However, the Cowra Japanese Garden is unique in that it is more than just a ‘Garden,’ it is a powerful symbol of good will, it encourages reconciliation and peace. The Garden is designed in order to contribute to cultural exchange, international understanding and to show an appreciation of all existing nature.

The gardens were designed in the style of the Edo Period and are a kaiyū-shiki or strolling garden. They are designed to show all of the landscape types of Japan. At five hectares (12 acres), theCowra Japanese Garden is the largest Japanese garden in the Southern Hemisphere. An annual Sakura Matsuri (cherry blossom festival) is a major event in Cowra’s tourism calendar and is held in the gardens during September. The festival celebrates the birth of spring. It attracts performers from across Australia and around the world. Locals, Australian and International visitors alike have the opportunity to experience traditional elements of Japanese culture. Sakura at the Cowra Japanese Garden is celebrated annually when the cherry blossoms are at their peak.

Relax and take time to explore the Garden, the beauty and tranquillity amounts to an experience both spiritual and cultural. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic or tantalise their taste buds in the Restaurant / café.

Dine in air-conditioned comfort or relax on the terrace and take in the picturesque five-hectare Garden. The restaurant offers all day breakfast, morning and afternoon teas and lunches seven days a week (8.30 am to 5pm).
