[WANTED] English oak (Quercus robur)

Post by klaery »

Hi all,
I am after English oaks. Last winter I tracked some down but come spring they were in fact pin oaks not english oaks! Due to budget I am probably after works in progress, younger trees, seedlings or even acorns but all trees would be considered. Let me know if you have anything available via pm here. I am usually on daily and will get back to you asap.

Thanks in advance.

Is there no mature trees in Brissy? surprises me.

There is plenty of them around here where I live and they drop acorns everywhere. If you cannot find any there, let me know and I will collect some and mail them to you.

I have 2 in the ground from Acorn, and 2 collected from Goulbourn.
I need to lift and trim them and repot the collected ones. This weekend maybe if i can get all my Maples done first.

Hi Ken, thank you for the offer :)
It is one of this trees that nurseries won't sell because they 'won't grow in Brisbane'. I know of two mature trees near me doing fine. Nurseries don't have tridents for the same reason and they also grow fine. I went a couple of months ago to visit the two I know of and no acorns. What time of year do acorns fall?

If any Brisbanites know of other mature trees please let me know :)

That's the worst thing about living in rural sa, the local nurseries don't stock much that would be useful for bonsai as they "won't do well here". As for Yamadori, we have acres and acres of soursobs and marshmallows available :palm:

There are a couple of Radiata's I've been eyeing off, but they're on the side of a major road...

Just dig the radiatas and say you are clearing weeds :)

Thanks Dave, didn't think of them. Will call during the week. Rightio Ken might be time to check back with those two trees.

Thanks all for the help.

Haha, they're right under the parent trees so they haven't got anywhere to go anyway. Just have to convince the other half, after she already told me I have enough trees :?

I'm in the Northern Districts Bonsai Club in Adelaide and we did a Radiata dig a couple of months back in Mt Crawford Forest. There's a bit section of it where they grow wild (there are plenty of 'planned' pine forests in the area too, but this one is 'wild' so we're allowed to dig there). I picked up a couple on the dig - there were thousands there, and the only reason I didn't get more was because i'm a weakling and ran out of energy digging. :palm:

Just wack on some high vis gear, get a couple of mates to stand around and lean on shovels watching you dig, and you'll look just like a council worker who's meant to be there :P

I was actually given one with an auction I won the other week, was thrown in as an extra as its just a stick in a pot at the moment :P

Lol, it's not the digging that bothers me, it's the repercussions of bringing home "another tree"

Was poking around Ebay last night and found 2 for you
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/10-YEAR-OLD- ... 4ad9c760cf
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/6-YEAR-OLD-E ... 4ad9c783df

At that price, my 2 collected ones with a 3 inch trunk might be $1k and the 2 that have been in the ground for 5 years must be similar

I connot believe that they will sell for what he is asking.

Ken

Ken I've seen these on there for a long time now-so far no one has been ripped off by them-the same seller also has a bunch of other "advanced stock" at similar pricing

I have been thinking of offering this tree for sale at the Brisbane show in September.
It's about 18 to 20 years old, grown from acorn, and is just under 500mm from the top of the pot.

Happy to consider any offers.
