There is a new copy available through Fishpond (fishpond.com.au) @ $47.96 (free postage).
I got a copy through them a while ago. It's a large format paperback. The 1997 book is a reprint of the 1996 edition, not a new edition... It's since been reprinted as a paperback in 2002, 2006 and 2011.
Well worth getting.

The litterature I have read from the Koreshoff's is not much chop IMO
Some of her writings in International Bonsai are embarrassingly juvenile

Are you serious about Bonsai?, the reason I ask is that any thing this good is well worth the read. It contains information, on all aspects of Bonsai. It even covers subjects specific to species and what treatment.

I found after 10 years in Bonsai, what treatment for and what Phoma was.
I always recommend this book to all who ask what books to buy.

I never said don't buy it. And no, I'm not serious about bonsai, it's a hobby. Something that I do it for fun. That fun also entails reading about bonsai for approximately 4 hours a day. I am a visual person, I prefer to see things being done in photos, videos and in person. I prefer Leongs books as he provides a tonne of photos with his text.

Deborah Korreshoff's drawings and styling is excellent. Her text however is away with the fairies.

I have not found any "off with the fairies" writing in this particular book. This took many, many years to write, because Deborah researched everything to the enth degree before committing it to paper. Her second book, however, was "off with the fairies", but then it was a fairy book I guess.

I was told that the book contains a lot of information from her father's notes during his many years in bonsai. I only had a cursory glance at it, but will need to track it down again.

I agree with the way people learn and read things. Everyone is different where some prefer visual learning and training while others prefer to read/learn.
I personally am a visual learner as well, I have found that Bonsai "Its Art..." is very text heavy and I have to skim read on certain parts to keep me interested in reading. Some useful illustration but I have to agree that the book does require images to keep it interesting like Leongs book.

Deborah's book has long been regarded as one of the premier books on bonsai. True its not for everyone as one size doesn't fits all. Keep in mind that the book was written over 20 years ago and we have all learnt a lot since then. I read it and found it enthralling. A treasure trove of information.
We need to give credit where credit is due and honour those pioneers who paved the road on which we walk. Remember that the Korreshoff's (senior) were bonsai pioneers in this country and didn't have the wealth of experience available to learn from as we do today. We stand on their shoulders and much of what we take for granted today was discovered by them (and others) by trial and error - not by surfing the web or joining a club. They WERE the club back in the 50's!

Starting out in the hobby I also found this to be one of the better books around - there were certainly a lot worse out there. The John Naka books are also good, but very $$! These days I like the older Bonsai Today magazines.
