Patience Naimul. Jarad is a bit further north so weather will be warmer there and it also depends when you planted. Seed germinates in its own time.

Thanks Neil, I will wait and see. I feel like a little kid getting so excited over little plants.

Mine are getting a couple of hours of Sun every day. The ones that have sprouted get more.

Also, Neil mentioned that the smaller acorns take longer because their shells are thicker.

This thread prompted me to plant my packet of shibui's trident seeds today.
Went to the fridge to retrieve them, where I had stashed them at the back of the top shelf bagged with damp sphagnum since receiving them, and WHOA!
Looked like a bag of bean sprouts!!!!
They were germinating in the bag!, with little white tap-roots sprouting everywhere.
Gently sewed them all, with fingers crossed.

Yes!! one of my oaks have finally sprouted, red tipped just like one of Jarad's. would never have thought it was the seedling if that photo hadnt been posted

So far I've got Acer Davidii (snake bark maple) seedlings coming out my ears as well as a couple of crab apples and some green Japanese maple seeds sprouting that I collected from the garden here. Still waiting with baited breath to see the Acer Pentaphyllum sprout, as well as the red and weeping Japanese maples

Most species will germinate whenever it is warm enough. There are a few species from very cold climates that require stratification (a cold period) before they will germinate but we are finding that even many where stratification has been recommended will germinate without it if the seed is fresh.

Nah just saw the thread and got curious. I understand the stratification part just wasn't sure if they'd grow if I put them in the ground during autumn or winter or just lay dormant.

Seed of plants from warmer climates will often germinate as soon as it gets damp so you can get seedlings of these to grow at any time of year. I usually sow seed of natives in summer so the seedlings are big enough to plant out in autumn and winter when the ground is damp.
Seed of cooler climate species stays dormant while it is cold then germinates when the temperatures start to warm up in spring. I usually sow fresh seed soon after I collect it and it lays dormant through winter then germinates in spring but with many types you can dry the seed and store it over winter then plant it in spring and it will start to grow almost straight away.

There are now 4 that have broken the surface. It's amazing how fast they grow when they get some sun!

I have a few more photos in between, but I figured the above 2 give a pretty good idea of the growth rate.

Only 5-10 more years and they might look like trees!

Nice! How long till the trident shaped leaves sprout?

I will hold of feeding the big green one as I removed the tap root, so I'm not sure if the fert will damage the freshly cut area.
