Hi EdwardH , Mate the vegies are strategically planted there to catch the run off . Hence they too are growing like noxious weeds , cant waste all the good ferts to the surrounding grass .

Genius, I'd like to implement permaculture into growing bonsai in the future, great tip. Keep em coming.

Hi Andrew F , mate with the amount of water and ferts that flow around here it needs to be utilised to the best possible advantage . The corn has a second planting below the first , onions in with the crabapple , "no bugs" , snow peas next to the Trident , tomatoes below the mixed grow bed as with capsicums and more corn . If its too much for us then there is a good neigbour with little ones so i send it over there .

I could grow vegies for the neigbourhood but i dont have that much time to spare .

Cheers . Alpine

Hi bonborn , mate thats one of my favorite trunks at the moment . Unfortunately it has to be re-potted as its struggling in the mild heat to date and won't survive summer in the current pot . I will need to keep tabs on the growth before reducing the apex and begin building the ramafication this season .

Alpine,

I've just sat and read through this thread while at work (whoops) and just wanted to say I think you have done an amazing job!! Bonsai needs people like you to carry out these experiments and post these types of longer term progressions for the rest of us!

I'm an aussie :aussie: (originally from Newcastle) living in London and am a member of a few different forums but this by far is one of the better threads I have read!

Thanks for sharing!

Hi alpine do you just run the hedge trimmers over and around these or are you using secatuers and selectively pruning?

Welcome back Alpine.
Where have you been?

Hope all is well.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Hi Isitangus , mate the electric trimmer died and the replacement was a petrol job but that wouldn't start so i trimmed by hand with secatuers , then went over them again yesterday with branch cutters for the final detail .

Just when you think you've finished it appears i missed a couple

.
With branch placement and development taking place the hedge trimmer would have done more damage than good .

Hi Biocs , mate lost the passion for bonsai and forums . I have been to the big smoke and checked out a few nurseries in my travels and returned to our local club after a long absence for some well needed inspiration .Plenty of overgrown material here to play with so each little chore produces a little more much needed desire to continue .

Cheers Alpine

Happy to see you back alpine.

I think we all go up and down a bit in the motivation department?

Its great to see all your hard work is not wasted.

Maaaate, good to hear ya haven't quit on us. While you may have lacked in motivation, selfishly I rely on you and such threads for motivation! So stick around and keep the gold standard work coming.

Cheers,
Mo
