Thanks for the info. However, from my experience and others that I know, except for smarty pants, all other bougainvillea species do not do well with carving... Doesn't matter what you use to preserve the dead wood, rotting is unavoidable. It actually happens from the inside out!

I actually did a couple more big digs after this one. Not as big but due to the narrow space, I had to chop all the roots close to the stumps and they seem to survive too. It appears that bougainvilleas are quite tough in this regard. From the experience, I learned that as long as the timing is right and sufficient soil, water and fertilizer during nursery time, the survival rate is very high.

I did a defoliating recently and today it pushes out heaps of flower buds. Looks like full bloom this time. :fc:

Amazing stuff. What vision you had - I would never even think of this size of Yamadori as a future bonsai!
