 Peterb,
For SammyD's vids on youtube - you search for "Aussie Bonsai Bloke" (but you must say it in a deep voice!)

Hi guys bit of an update on this one.

Probably never be a good bonsai but still is ok. Too much reverse taper.
It is what it is though and I still like it.
The stain I used on the dead wood should fade in time and blend in more

Hey guys
Thanks for the pointer KC&R, I'm pretty sad and disappointed that you like that tree SammyD. I would have happily taken it off your hands if you didn't like it mate:- :D. Tree is looking good mate and so healthy
Cheers Peterb

V Carving will help to minimise the inverse taper up top - virt attached. Apple can be split too with success when dormant if you feel the base needs widening - you have a uro you can split into and wedge open. Time the split just before it buds out - I use wire to stop the split running. A reciprocal saw is good to start the splitting process This will greatly flare the base out. I'd do one operation one year then wait to see how it responds and do the next when it is growing strong.

PS It's easy to graft crab apple onto this stump if you wanted - they thread graft readily.
