Hi all
As you all know, Earlier this year the NBPCA had Pavel Slovak out for the inaugural Bonsai Week, viewtopic.php?f=25&t=21100&p=215078 and I was lucky enough to get a nomination for the School of Bonsai to do a workshop with Pavel.
I selected a Japanese Black Pine from Ray Nesci to take along and had a great day working with Pavel to design the tree.
the tree has been growing madly over winter and needed to be potted up so I can work the roots and mange it easier as it will be much lighter
I a sure I have posted the tree, but figured i will create a progression thread for it to keep track off it over time.

I have not cut back any new growth as I took a large amount of root off, but it shodu be fine
Now back on the bench in full sun with seasol every few days and light ferts as we move into spring

Re: JBP - Pavel Slovak workshop -NBPCA Bonsai week
the tree has grown vigorously and had back budded in quite a few spots which is very nice to see.
The candles had extended evently all over, and filled out nicely but none are too wild so have left them all on till now.
Yesterday arvo it got all candled cut back to just 2 or so needles and then all upward and downward pointing needles removed.
A few tweaks to the branch positioning and decided to leave the wire on a little longer, despite some of it cutting in already. I removed 1 small branch in the smaller apex to lower it a little compared to the main trunk.

Nice work Ken,I like Pavel's design indeed.
Looking at your last image the subordinate trunk looks very strong.as a suggestion and only one at that..to slow it down maybe bring up a lower branch as a new leader and giving it a bend or two, keeping in character with the main trunk.
Only thought Ken
Your tree has a cracking nebari with transition to trunk(taper)
Cheers Anthony

Re: JBP - Pavel Slovak workshop -NBPCA Bonsai week
I agree and have been lookign at it since the workshop thinking on what to do there.
I would like that trunk to be shorter as well. ( or the main trunk taller )
There is a branch off the front of the main trunk that i woud like to remove as well ( or Jin) so as to expose more of that bark.
I discussed that with Pavel on the day, but as he likes to keep a fuller tree we left in place.
Neither decision is set in stone yet so plenty of time for later tweaks and adjustments.
