I did root prune and repot over the winter. This might have to wait for next season.
This Trident has copped a lot already.
May consider planting in colander and foam box. Thanks for the tip.

Thought I'd try a some of the cuttings.
I like the look of this one, I've reduced the canopy quite hard but have I still left too much foliage on?

I think I've left most branches at 2 leaves

Personally I'd remove a whole lot more leaves and branches and make sure you leave this in a shaded location out of direct sun.

nah full sun to encourage it to bud. Shading a tree is for when its roots are damaged. Sun is for trees with strong roots and no leaves.

Correct.
My advice was in relation to your cutting.
Full sun for the base.

Don’t get too excited yet. This could just be from stored energy in the trunk.

That’s the base though so it should be fine

My bad! Scrub that last comment. I thought it was the big cutting!

Just a late update

Image

Back in May I’ve noticed the trunk splitting

Image

After bringing my tree into class we’ve confirmed there is dieback on maybe 1/8 of the trunk

I may have done trunk chop too early here and did not let leaves harden before chopping = lesson learnt

Ideas of cutting to the live vein to let tree role over were discussed

But I’ve purchased and received a few whips from Shibui which may get me to try my first grafting project

Cool.

Good to see some budding.
How did the "cutting" go?
