Two Big Crepe Myrtle Layers

Post by Huw.S »

Hi all!

Its fairly rare for me to post on here but I am wanting to get more involved in the forum!

I have recently done a few air layers on a big crepe myrtle in my Grandmothers backyard and thought it would make for a good progression post on here for all to see and comment on. I am really excited that the air layers were both so successful and its doubly exciting to have some big and interesting material to play with now.

These layers were both put on in early September and were cut a few days before Christmas. Transported in my car and then with some very careful chainsaw work i was able to get a very clean and neat cut below where the roots had formed. Put one into a wooden box and the other a plastic pot and away they went! In true Crepe Myrtle fashion they took off and now have roots coming through the bottom of both pots!!

I will leave these guys to grow this season and may do some big pruning in winter. Enjoy the photos and any advice/ comments are more than welcome!

Two Big Crepe Myrtle Layers

Post by MJL »

This is a reasonably technical appraisal: “Holy sh!t Batman”

Or as Paul Hogan might say: “That’s not a air layer.... this is an air layer!”

I simply have no room for (pre) Bonsai material that big but I do sometimes get a little dispirited with my twigs when I see advanced material like this. For example, I noticed some flowers on my little Crepe Myrtle that I am growing in ground at present - at least the colour of the flower is nice.

Thank you for posting and I look forward to watching this progression ... impressive stuff.

Thanks! They are certainly happy, let's hope they still feel that way when I start working on them!

MJL I don't have a lot of material this big, in fact this will now be my new biggest! I am looking forward to having something like these to work on though. The purple flower is really nice, all in good time.

I will try to keep up regular posts as I work on them.
