Very nice work Peter. I too have had little luck finding the tree in junipers I need to do more of them I think. If you are keen to teach you could let us know how you did the carving. :D
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Bretts,

Carving ( like Bonsai ) takes practice and a good set of tools to achieve the desired results. I am still learning every time I carve.

The basic principle I use when carving is in nature the soft timber ( in-between branch nodes ) weathers before the harder timber ( branch nodes old and new ). So the shape I end up with is like an hour glass. Trunks I will hollow out more at the top than the bottom.

With that in mind I look at what I am trying to achieve then define my boundaries. This can take some time as it can impact on the trees health. I use my smaller carver for that, it has speed control and a smaller tip. Once this is done I use the heavier carver (gently, gently) to do the main part of the work.

The Juniper in the post has had only the primary carving done. When this tree is putting on new growth in spring I will refine it further.

This just a small insight into carving. Hope it helps

Peter

Thanks Peter. Is it only the two carving bits you use?

Bretts,

Yes, those plus a Stanley knife. I am look for a more open bit in the smaller one. It clogs easily
