As promised a comparison of my garden ginko and the bonsai one . Note that the bonsai Ginko is starting to turn and they are both exposed to very simular sunlight , wind ,cold etc . They really have reduced a lot .

Digging an old thread up here, but I’m looking for photos of a Ginkgo that was shown I think it was the 2017 Victorian show in maybe Box Hill? Big trunk in an incredibly shallow might have been turquoise tray.

Total long shot I know, but I remember the very clearly tree and can’t find photos of it anywhere!

It was hands down the best Ginkgo I have seen in Australia, the tray was a big rectangle about 5cm deep and the tree the traditional flame shape but very well ramified. Spewing I didn’t photograph it when I had the chance

Just when I was going to start a thread on my two i just bought this comes up.

I got these last week for a decent price. Particularly curious which direction to take the bigger one - is it worth gradually pushing the growth down low or should i just plant it as a yard tree? The roots are all on one side but it has a nice curving taper up to about a foot high. Would it layer and bud back reliably?

That's a 1L Charlie Carp for scale.

Layers can take some time, but do work allegedly with the wrapping wire around the trunk method. Ginkgo absolutely will back bud and reshoot from a trunk chop. I dug a6ft one out and cut it back to a shoot that was at maybe 2 ft up the trunk from the base. It has shot away well and is still budding on bare wood 2 years later

Ginkgo are incredibly resilient. I always assumed they were delicate, probably as a result of the 'maidenhair' name. They are anything but. Mine has been one of the most drought hardy. Roots can be reduced hugely. Prune anywhere and it will bud even on very old wood.
Layers are possible and I have heard they even grow as root cuttings which I intend to try this spring.

Obviously not mine, but a video of Masashi Hirao repotting a large specimen at Seisho-en. Video is narrated in french at the beginning, turn on CC for the english translations. Just a basic talk on repotting he does, but the tree is worth the look.

This might be a general question for deciduous hard pruning, but TimS what time of year did you do this? I'm gonna cut mine just above the horizontal branches for an insurance policy. I won't risk repotting this year unless you guys reckon they're that bulletproof? In the past i've taken that term too far at times...
