Eucalyptus rubida..the candlebark gum.

Post by bodhidharma »

Eucalyptus rubida is famous for its peeling bark which hangs of it in great slivers, much like the wax on a candle. Hence its name the "Candlebark'. it is also famous for its stunning colour as the bark slivers off. This specimen is in my back yard and i once did a thread of its pruning. They are notorious branch droppers and that is why we pruned it. The cost of a Pruning job of a large yellow box and this tree was 3,500 dollars. Yep, a lot of money when you dont have it. We did not think it was our right to fell a tree of this age as it was accessed at 500 odd years old. it came back like it was a sapling and is paying us back with a magnificent display of bark colour.

Incredible tree, love the bark and colours. Purchased young tube stock couple weeks back along with some other native species to try, eager to watch their development.

Thanks for posting.

Yep agree, but I think Bodhi, you better get that out of the ground and into a pot before it gets away from you.

That's an impressive tree.

Have you had a dig around to check out the nebari? I would assume that after 500 years of growth it would be a mess. Maybe a ground layer will be able to give you some better roots.

I don't trust Bonsai, they are a little shady.
