Near view
One thing people often fail to consider when styling bonsai is the intended viewing interpretation. Are we viewing a tree from a distance or are we standing at the base of a large tree? The typical view of a broom might be a visualisation of a tree 20 or even 200 metres away. While a "sumo" tree with a wide base and dramatic taper is more like the image we get when standing very close. I think it helps a lot when positioning branches if we can visualise a full sized tree.

Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Re: Near view
Not at all sure Mike, I took about 15 similar photos in 5 minutes paying more attention to structure than speciestreeman wrote:Nice! But Cypress??

Re: Near view
I suspect the tree is Sequoia gigantium, I saw this tree when I last visited the Hobart Botanic Garden.
