I took this photo during a recent visit to the Hobart botanical gardens, I think it was a cyprus from memory.
One thing people often fail to consider when styling bonsai is the intended viewing interpretation. Are we viewing a tree from a distance or are we standing at the base of a large tree? The typical view of a broom might be a visualisation of a tree 20 or even 200 metres away. While a "sumo" tree with a wide base and dramatic taper is more like the image we get when standing very close. I think it helps a lot when positioning branches if we can visualise a full sized tree.
