Near view

I took this photo during a recent visit to the Hobart botanical gardens, I think it was a cyprus from memory.
One thing people often fail to consider when styling bonsai is the intended viewing interpretation. Are we viewing a tree from a distance or are we standing at the base of a large tree? The typical view of a broom might be a visualisation of a tree 20 or even 200 metres away. While a "sumo" tree with a wide base and dramatic taper is more like the image we get when standing very close. I think it helps a lot when positioning branches if we can visualise a full sized tree.

Not at all sure Mike, I took about 15 similar photos in 5 minutes paying more attention to structure than species

I suspect the tree is Sequoia gigantium, I saw this tree when I last visited the Hobart Botanic Garden.

As I recall the tree was planted about 1950-52 and is very impressive.
