Tree's planted by John Macarthur in 1824 to 1850

Post by Steven »

Hambledon Cottage was constructed by John Macarthur in 1824 in the grounds of Elizabeth Farm Estate.
John returned to Australia from exile in 1817 bringing with him a large variety of plants including Oak, Cork and Laurel. These specimens were used to landscape the cottage gardens.
Whilst the exact dates of planting are not known, it is likely that the following tree's are amongst the oldest exotic plants in Australia.

Hambledon Cottage can be found at 63 Hassall Street Parramatta, NSW

Awe inspiring thanks for showing.
There are some amazing trees in Orange, in the park and in the streets. I have been meaning to take some pics. I will now have to see if there are any dates of planting as well. 8-)
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Took some pictures of the trees in the park at Orange. There were planted a bit later than the ones from Elizabeth Farm Estate. These were planted in the 1870's. I thought they must be close.

Orange has such a great climate for all the hardy species, from evergreens to deciduos. The Autum Colour display is brilliant.

A drive around the streets of Orange is spectacular. In some places trees like this make a canopy over the road.
