i would actually go to the length of assuming it would work on the deciduous trees that can bleed alot too ?

If you are getting a lot of bleeding on a Trident maple for instance, you have probably cut it at the wrong time of year. If you have to make big cuts on a trident in spring time you should also trim the roots.

I haven't tried the wire method on deciduous so maybe give it a go.

Here is an update on the progress of the FNP.

After many (....many) hours of wiring every branch, I finally had a chance to do some preliminary branch placement.

As only half an hour was given to branch placement this afternoon, we still have alot of work to do before we set the tree aside for the time being.
I was keen to get a picture of the progress before the end of this week.

I will also be doing some shots of the other 3 sides before I go home today, Show you those later.

Hi all,

There are still many hours of work to go on this tree yet this year, and then another 3 to 5 years to get more and compact growth to fill it out appropriately.

Suggestions, virts, pot choice would be very welcome.

i will virt up with a new pot, and tighter foliage, do you have any idea what sort of pot you want for it? and is that the angle you plan on keeping it?

The pot should be something Japanese and very traditional for the FNP. Strong but gentle.

Its a green FNP rather than the usual blue.

Angle yet to be finally decided and the apex will probably be compacted a bit and the trunk leant more forward, although it may only be apparent from the side. Tilt to the right may vary as well so give it a red hot go.

Some wiggly wiring and bending, compressing to compact the long thin branches etc. to go yet but enough to go on I hope.

one other thing i was thinking grant, these branches look a little parallel is this how it is meant to be or are you guys planing on getting them more alternate?

so your thinking an unglazed pot, rectangle with clour feet, or cirle pot same unglazed. darker colour but not to dark.?

The more the tree tilts to the right the more unparallel the branches become. also the straight visible bits will be hidden where possible. The apex will be altered and may go left, right or forward depending on what is needed to complete the rework.

Obviously it is going to take a lot more time to do an actual rather than a virtual and the ultimate outcome will depend on what actually can be done with what we have to work with.

I am open to suggestions on pots.

Attached are all the photos from the four sides, warts and all.

You can see the amount of work still to go to get it looking good from all sides.

I hope you can start to imagine how it will look when finished.

The lowest branch on the right will be lowered further.
The lowest branch on the left will be first raised, then bent and lowered. This will differentiate the layers and do away with the bar branch effect. The lowest branch at the back, behind the lowest branch on the left, will also be raised to give a feeling of depth from the front.

And so on up the tree.

As someone jsut starting to work on Pines this is really really useful.

We will always show trees out the back if someone has a specific interest; just say Hi to the volunteer and senior bonsai person on duty.

We are often working on trees in the middle of the display as well and this one has taken a lot of work so has been seen by many people who come through the collection.

Still lots of work to do and, due to workload and other necessities, it will be a few weeks before it is finished for this season.
