Hi all,

A very generous member of the Canberra Bonsai Society has donated the perfect pot for ourgreen Five-needle pine.
New pot for five needle pine 1.JPG
It measures 59cm wide by 43cm by 10cm depth (outside) and 6.7cm depth internal.
It is a mid brown with a lovely shape.
New pot for five needle pine 2.JPG
Initially the tree will be lightly mounded and only slip potted into the new pot so that the new foliage will emerge on the correct planes and orientation. I will do a proper repot in autumn.
It will look slightly over potted for a year or two but I think this will be its long term pot.
Thanks to Ruth for the donation of the pot.
It was apparently bought as one of two when they were half price when the Koreschoff nursery was closing its doors for the last time.

Yes, it was a bit dissappointing to find that there was not a lot of strong root growth. We removed alot of the poor soil (being mindful not to stress the tree too much) and replaced with a mix of 40% diatomite 20% coco peat 20% marble chip 20% orchid pine nuggets. We added osmocote to this mix, watered well, then applied a seasol mixture. Now, we will take care of the tree in a shady spot, watching carefully for water requirements. Spring is a time where newly potted trees can be susceptible to root rot if kept too wet.

Hi all,

For the last ten days the Pine has been in a temporary shade struture(Trolley with shade cloth over it). For about 5 days with double layer of shade cloth then next 5 days with single layer of shadecloth and misted frequently to start with and now just a couple of times a day.

Its looking good and the new buds are elongating nicely.

Update,

The green Five Needle Pine is doing fine! Most of the new candles have fully elongated and filled out. Some dead end branchlets where there were no buds at all have back budded nicely.

We did only very minor candle shortening on the most vigorous candles and we will do a cut back in early January of the candles that are more than say 20mm long(as long as the tree is going fine). We will cut back to approx 5 or 6 sets of needles at the top of the tree and more in the middle and say 8 to 9 sets of needles on the lower branches. Any candles not longer than 20mm will be left alone completely.

Usually we get new buds emerging fairly quickly; say visible in 2 to 3 weeks and fully matured for the next spring growth after 5 or 6 weeks.

Hi all,

Here is a pic of the Five needle pine today.
IMG_2868 - Copy.JPG
The tree has a nice color and the new growth is relatively vigorous. The new needles are much smaller than last years needles so it will look much better once we can remove the old needles in autumn.

Only light trimming will be needed now as the weather is still cool and the new growth is not excessively long.

There are still many years worth of work to go on this tree but so far so good. The excessive wet we have had this year has been a worry but the tree seems happy in its new potting mix.

I just looked at the pics from April 2010. To tranform a pine in such a short period, including a repot is awesome. :hooray:
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Hi all,

I only trimmed off a very small amount of growth this year; only where the current years growth was both strong and outside the desired silhouette.

Next year if all goes well we should have strong growth all over and I will need to manage the vigour.
