Beautiful pine you have there. I would certainly keep the low branches.

Five needles pines do well in Canberra and this one will be no exception.

Well a round pot is perfect with so many possible fronts! Maybe you could display it on some sort of motorised turntable that slowly rotates. Like a rotating restaraunt with a different view every time you look

this one is a little tough grant, there are so many options, im not a fan of that big thick first branch/trunk whichever you would want to call it, but i think without it the tree will look un balanced, and if that one went the other one wouldnt look right either.

i think there is a classic bonsai in here though ;) will get back to you ;)

you will have to excuse the branches crossing over the trunk, i have had computer probs recently, lost all my files etc. etc. etc. wasnt happy, but after fixing it all it hasnt been running right and my programs arent working hence i havent been able to blend it in.

After looking more closely at the tree today there are three or four possible fronts and designs.

The most obviously looking front(picture no 7) does not really make a satisfactory front and the branches give a flat front and a bit of a fish skeleton look..

Pictures 8 and 9 are within about 10 degrees of each other and give plenty of movement with quick taper.

Pics 6 and 10 are much the same but lend a possible twin trunk design.

Next week we will get on with the cutting and sealing that didn't happen today. Then some very light trimming to encourage back budding next year.

Then I will play around with some angles of lean for the tree and see what comes out of that design wise.

I won't cut off any major low branches in a hurry as they will continue to thicken the trunk over the next five years or so.

I will do some close ups of the possible designs and branches next week for you to play with.

hi Jamie,

Nice virt. Yes a classic bonsai and that is good.

Angle seven is the most obvious front when you first see the bonsai in the flesh and very obvious from the photos. It does however have a problem further up the tree with an unfortunate cut many years ago. This will be more obvious as we tidy up the tree and expose and photograph. It can be got around with some grafting or clever bending etc.

Angle 8 and 9 give the trunk some good low movement of the trunk and a cutting point higher up but below the apex problem of angle 7.

Angles 6 and 10 give the possiblity of multiple trunks, either two or three.

It is a complex tree and will be lots of fun to sort out.

gday grant, thanks :D and no probs, i will look at the other angles closely over the weekend, there are many options in this tree, i figured that out last night when i stripped the tree back to a basic trunkline.

i will get back to you with other possibilities :D

OK,

We have been working on the tree again this morning recutting the wounds around the base and sealing, trimming out rubbish thin surface roots embedded in the base and generally tidying it up so that it will heal well and grow beautifuuly over the following years.

To me there are 3 possible fronts and four possible designs; all single trunk and no double trunk(it just doesn't work).

As we expose it more I will let you see what we see.

However one major decision has been made and we will cut out the very heaviest and least useable of the low branches. This is the branch that was briefly considered for an extra trunk.

This will open up the lower canopy and make it possible to see into the tree.

Will post before and after pics of the work this morning when done.

glad you have decided to remove that eavy low branch grant, i think the tree will be much better for it and to use as another trunk just didnt work in my eyes either ;)

look forward to seeing the new shots and i will go from there with a virt for each three front angles :D

Found a 4th front, so that makes it 4 possible fronts and two possibilities from one of them. Interestingly they are all about 90 degrees to each other.

Photographing now and then will cut off heaviest low branch and rephoto.

Grant.
