Hi Steven,

It looks like a good point to chop it down to and should result in a nice gentle trunk angle change. I would be really careful with that shoot for the new top of the trunk though, it is a fig yes, but the shoot is small, young and very close to the cut so I would make sure the cut is well sealed and perhaps a bit shaded. I only say this because I recently lost the apex shoot on a similar trunk chop and I am wondering how to correct it.

all the best

LOL that comment was made on Tuesday night and that rock aint ever coming out!

The top bit that Steven chopped off, I also saved and is now in a pot of diatomite, I am hoping it will grow just like the phoenix bit I glued back together a few months ago.

Craig, the rock does not seem an issue when you see it in the bark

MattA's 'upside down ice-cream cone' comment had been ringing in my ears so I thought I would make it more difficult for him to come up with an analogy
:palm: My bad...

The chop was for the best, Ken needed another tree to add to his collection

Craig, I will see how the rock likes my stonemasonry skills next time I visit Steven. ;)

A bit of a trim and some light wiring last night on this one. The leader is being grown by clip and grow so the taper will be maximum.

Love the exposed roots on figs. Wen you say clip and grow, for the leader...what exactly will you do...grow to half the trunk bellow and chop?

Hi Neli,

I'm trying to get a nice even taper from the base to the tip. I've cut the leader back 2 or 3 times only leaving an extra 5 or 10 mm each time to help. In summer I'll defoliate and take a better picture so you can see what i mean.

Regards,
Steven

Steven thanks,
how thick is the leader when you cut it, and how long. You said you cut 5-10mm longer...but how long is it when you cut it? Do you leave any side branches as escape branches when you grow it or you remove all side branches? Do you leave any branches that you would like to keep.
