Seiju Elm

Hey folks,

This is the first tree I have put up for opinions before any work has been done, I have a rough idea for this tree but would love to hear thoughts on what others would do with this tree.

I picked this up today, it was much cheaper than I thought it would be and seeing as I don't have a seiju I couldn't say no

At this stage I am unsure of whether I will use any of the current branching or just chop somewhere, fertilise and see what pops up, I would like to do this tree in a natural style and not the cookie cutter exaggerated triangle but I do appreciate that this would give a good classic tree. Something like the styling of Harry Harrington's english elm here would be fantastic.

I realise they are 2 very different trunks but the naturalistic branch structure is more what appeals to me.

Looking forward to some ideas

2208 looks the most appealing to me - but the top needs some work. The transition from bulky base to thin leader needs work - I would chop it at the first direction change and let it grow some more

Have a look at this for a Seiju elm. Usually on display daily at the NBPCA.

Very natural and one of my all time favourites.

I thought I might update this thread,

So some time last winter I chopped this tree and then fed and fed and fed over spring and summer, then picked the best of what came up and here it is now

Whats here is all new growth, none of the top growth from the initial tree was kept. I didn't get quite as much usable growth as I would have liked but I am hoping after some more light work coming into spring I will get some more stuff I can use but for now it's a start

That looks like interesting foliage. Any chance of a close-up? Is it pinnate? Bi-, Tri-?
