I use the GIMP exclusivelyand find it quite easy to use once you get the idea. Cross platform and everyone can downlooad and use the same application regardless of what PC they use

Anyone wanna create a tutorial for Virts?
Plenty of then on the net for general work.

Grant,
I dont have Gimp, and it might be better since Ken recommended it, but I use ordinary and the new improved paint, which is free on that link to do things like this:
