some bonsai that I like

Post by treeman »

When you first look at these trees, what are your instincts? What do you see?
What would you do with them? What is your reasoning?

The first trees mimic two stone pines sitting by themselves in the middle of a field on a hill. I wouldn't change a thing because they trigger imagination for me and I dont feel they need anything changed to enhance that.

The second, my first instinct is to jin all the left hand side because the tree has grown stronger to the right suggesting it is leaning off a hill that way or battling wind from the left. It doesn't look tortured enough to the left to look natural to me.

The third tree is the same but the opposite way. To me the section at the top right looks healthy and suggests no struggle which is contradicting to the lower left.

First is exquisite and reminds me of real tree's.
I would admire and maintain only - it's near too perfect :)

The others I appreciate but they do not resonate with me.
The last is my preferred out of these two.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Biocs and squizzy, Music to my ears re the first tree! Sometimes that little touch of ''neglect'' does a certain something which technique just cant do. You can almost see the wind rushing through those beaten branches.

The second, apart from the polished and peeled trunk I like it as is and the third, although a crappy picture really sings to me. Perfect the way it is. The more I look at it the more I like it. I can see a eucalypt or a melaleuca (or a giant juniper) if I try!

On second look. I would change one thing on the first tree. That stuff growing at the base ruins it imo. Plain moss would suit better.

1st tree for me also. Leave as is. Reminds me of my favourite camping spot hidden in the middle of a paper bark swamp next to a lake. Pot change worth considering ;) ;) :tu:
A stick in a pot is better than no stick at all. Remember even the best bonsai started as a stick.

To me number two looks incomplete ,way to clean. Maybe some heavy work on those jins to show some real hardships of life would help. The other two are beautiful trees. Cheers John.

Hi Treeman , they all look like the naturalistic approach which is something I prefer rather than the cookie cutter plan . As said sometimes neglect pays off , bit like hacking and chopping  replicating mother nature.

Hello Treeman,

I am new to this but here goes another opinion

First - needs a wider shallower pot
Second - agree with it is beautiful despite deadwood not doing it for me BUT pot does need changing
Third - including the pot is a masterpiece to me

Yes the pots could be a minor issue but the pictures are bad. Especially the first looks like it's on an angle and tilted back!

I'll be honest, the first time I looked at the first picture I thought that the two canopies were interfering with each other would have preferred some separation, and I found the flowers distracting. However after looking at it for a bit longer it was easy to get caught up in the composition and take in the whole scene. Now I really like it.

The last picture of the Shimpaku is my favourite. It's crackling with energy and I can't stop looking at it. It there a better photo somewhere?

Matt.

Hi Mike,

Have you seen Dan Robinson's book? Lots of "Wild" looking trees, heaps of deadwood and carving, all very carefully crafted.

Gavin
