Re: jbp for critique
hi looks pretty good hard to say without left right and back shots the only thing is the little bit of reverse taper in the middle of the tree could easily be rectified if it is as the carve well could you put up some other shots may b one the same as this shot but looking a bit more from above to see th branch placement

Re: jbp for critique
firstly the tree looks very healthy and the needles are reducing well so congrads
The tree does seem to have a bit of reverse taper on one of the bends and also there appears very little taper in the whole tree with the bottom trunk a simular size to the apex. the first primary left branch is in a good position but then you have a few back branches that seem at simular height to the first left branch and the right branch near the third curve needs more defining and is somewhat dwarfed by all those back branches. If you were going for informal upright i feel it needs more work on that right branch of that third curve and that back branch slightly higher up needs pulling in more to the back of the tree slightly to the left to fill in that gap and give ot more a 3 diamential.. The apex also needs alittle defining as there is abit of distance between that right branch and the next branch . Its a nice tree but dosent really have that sence of age due to the lack of taper ,a soild root spread unless its buried? and branching that needs correcting with wiring and abit of pruning. Hope that helps

Re: jbp for critique
I wonder if the long term plan might be better as literati.
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Re: jbp for critique
nice mate, as the others have said its going well, as they have also stated that the reverse taper is a bit of a problem, but i think with some strong new growth and some detail wiring this could be covered up and hidden and made to work for you with correct foliage pad placement.
detail wiring, a few new branches whether you graft them in or hope to get buds in the right spot and you will be sweet, i would go for the really tight foliage pads that create a full canopy on the tree and you could strategically place them to hide some parts of the trunk that are effected by reverse taper and others that show some taper, this would create the illusion of taper
heres a virt for you jamie

Re: jbp for critique
well said guys what about somthing crazy after all its not mine carve that bit of reverse taper drill a couple of holes and pull the apex down
1.will fix reverse taper issue
2.will shorten trees height
3.will reduce the gaps
just depends how far your willing to go id give it a crack or the other options are all worth a good go as well.

Not bad Jamie
With a long term plan on the root base that could be nice.

thanks mate the nebari is another issue i didnt look at, i think it would be a case of either thread grafting (not sure how well this works for conifers, if at all) or fusing some struck cuttings to the nebari to give it a more flared feature.
i think the second option would probably be easier to do

Re: jbp for critique
reverse taper is when the trunk on a tree is wider at a higher point then at the base of the tree. it is something we try and avoid in bonsai but sometimes we cant, it happens when we have to many branches growing from the one spot and the trees energy is directed to that point in the trunk causing it to swell.

Re: jbp for critique
agree on that mike, thats why i thought grafting new branches in would be the way to go, that way you wont be pruning as such but adding more foliage which will make the tree stronger in the long run
