Maidenwell diatomite reopened 12 months ago

Post by Paulneill »

Hi guys,

I was looking for some potting media and found this article, it says the maidenwell mine has reopened.

I love this stuff and couldn't believe how easy/ healthy my trees grew in it , I'm glad to see it's up and running again . Has anyone been able to find any of it to buy .

I'm living in Western Australia now so I'm looking to get some posted to my house if that's possible.

Link to the article is below.

I'm up in Brisbane and have found it at a pet supply store, try searching for Kleensorb.

cant vouch for the validity of the claim but someone on the BSWA facebook page has said that Amgrow Wettasoil granular soil wetter (26$ for 10 kg from the green shed) is diatomite...
havent checked it out yet though.

The Mt Sylvia diatomite is different to Maidenwell.

I emailed Maidenwell yesterday, and today received a response from a retailer http://www.dedirect.com.au who said Maidenwell passed on my enquiry. Their coarse size is 2-8mm. The company details (dedirect) are:
Holistic Farming Pty Ltd
6 Lindsay Street
Southside/Gympie QLD 4570
Tel: 07 5371 9603
Mobile: 0429884315
e-mail: info@holisticfarming.com.au

So, if you want to pay postage from Gympie, you can give them a try.

Has anyone tried the maidenwell diatomite?

I can't seem to find Mt Sylvia diatomite.

I wouldn't recommend the Maidenwell diatomite. Apparently, they are no longer able to bake it for hardness. My recent experience with some from DE Direct is linked here:

There are some photos of how it fails to hold up when wet.

The wettasoil does claim to be diatomite - has anyone tried this for hardness? I couldn't see it mentioned in any other threads.

Thanks

NO idea re the alternate varieties of diatomite now but if its mined in AUS then I doubt it will be hard :-(
that why I now use Akadama, Pumice and zeolite as the hardness and durability is guranteed

and Yes I can ship to Tas :-)

I’m still looking for decent diatomite. I’m using pumice and akadama atm.
Anyone tried cleansorb recently or managed to get madenwell?

Never found diatomite except at Isabella's Hydroponic Nursery out near Wanneroo but by that time I'd found reliable and good quality pumice.

Give Isabella a call to check stock.
