Why waste it at the bottom - why not use it in your mix ? Unless it is something like 10mm and is too big to go into the mix ? I use it and diatomite in my totally inorganic mix with very good results.

Great idea for grow pots, not so good for display pots. I have been potting all day and the ones with a scoria drainage layer in a large orchid pot have produced great roots.
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

I use it in my training pots to stop the diatomite mix coming out the holes

Yeah I'm talking about the 10mm. I knew you could use it for grow pots. Just wasn't sure about bonsai pots.
Why not such a good idea Gerard?
I'm talking about just one 10mm layer before I put the diatomite and Zeolite mix in....

Been proved that a drainage layer does nothing so better of just filling the entire pot wit u our preferred mix

Re: Scoria as a drainage layer at the bottom of Bonsai pots?
If it's 3-7ml, use through entire mix.If you use only a larger size above that and put on the bottom, all roots will go there, and because you start to get 'perched' water, you will get very thick roots. As in those mentioned with the orchids, which will then throw out your growing regime,as odd branches[related to the larger root's,]will grow more quickly than some of the other ones. It's all about balance.

Re: Scoria as a drainage layer at the bottom of Bonsai pots?
I like shallow pots, sometimes a deeper pot for when a tree dries out too quickly in our hot summer. By the time a tree is ready for a display pot the need for a drainage layer has passed.
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Leong [bonsai south] sells a fairly small sized scoria if you are interested in trying it in a mix. The roots absolutely love it, its got great A.F.P.Reece wrote:Ok this all makes sense now....
