Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a Bonsai Nursery for pruning and re-potting near the northern suburbs of Melbourne?

As I'm not confident in re-potting and pruning, I'm trying to find a place that will look after my bonsai's

I'm pretty sure that Simon at Orient Bonsai does bonsai maintenance

Is that place on mahoneys road Reservoir?
If it is, it's close by to me.

Also can a Cotoneaster be pruned and re potted now or should I wait for the first day of spring?

Yes that the one on, 11 Mahoneys Road Reservoir

They do re-potting and and are very friendly give them a visit, i think but not sure they provide lessons as well for beginners.

I just did my cotoneasters today. I repot cotoneaster any time from mid winter through to when the leaves come out.

I will bring it to Orient Bonsai next week to get pruned and repotted.

Not sure if you remember Shibui, but we spoke on another post about my Cotoneaster with the long branches.
While i shortened the branches, I think its time to re pot. Its coming to the third year of ownership in March next year.

If any of your trees are exposed to the lovely winter sun we've been receiving, you should see some bud swelling already, time for repotting.

Also, if you haven't been to Orient Bonsai before you won't notice any difference. If you have, the change in the place over the past 12 months is amazing, they have expanded next door, new buildings, car park, coffee shop, training rooms, you name it it's very impressive. I would call them first before taking your tree there for work, I'm sure they will assist you.

I don't need a coffee shop but the new car park will be very welcome. It was a nightmare getting in and out of there before

Funny you should say that, I was thinking along the same lines, I was the only visitor and there was a Merc and a BMa in the carpark. They are doing a great job. (put my Clunker to shame) it wanted to leave.

Yes they sure have been in the winter sun! Some of my bonsais are starting to get new buds.

I'll go take a look down there and see what they say, I'll bring my bonsai in today hopefully!

If you're looking for an honest opinion, I'd be disappointed

I would join a Club and learn to do it myself. They are simple designs you have and a Club workshop could have sorted them out for the cost of a membership
There are 6~ Clubs in Melbourne that could help if you want

I wouldn't be disappointed, but I agree that these trees are at a very early stage of development and you could/should be able to do this yourself and will learn a great deal by doing so.

I second the suggestion re joining a Club if you are not confident or comfortable doing it. You will get so much more out of the hobby if you do this work yourself.

Definitely join a club, it is the only way to really learn the hobby!
