Think of the long cascade pot given as an example, using this manipulation of the drainage you can raise the saturation level in the pot to stay closer to the surface instead of accumulating at the bottom. Very useful when you understand it. Same concept in all bonsai pots just not as extreme. When you look at the video of the azalea repot with this understanding it makes perfect sense of raising the saturation level to stay to the surface of the soil.
