Cant think of one in the Sydney area Joshua but I buy mine from a place in Hartley just over the Blue Mountains called Maple Springs Nursery. Beautiful maples plus other trees and they are mature. Can be expensive though. Lovely area so one day you may be able to get there to have a look.

Nurseries in general often have grafted Japanese red maples cut leaf variety. If you are specifically just wanting a japanese red maple, try ringing around nurseries, however if you actually want a bonsai starter, go to Ray Nesci Bonsai Nursery in Dural.joshua.weekes wrote:Morning everyone,

However, ring first as sometimes he may be out of stock. Just a heads up, the red Japanese maple is harder to grow than ordinary Japanese maple as it is more prone to root rot, but deshojo Japanese maple, which will start out red, then over time turn green, is a beautiful variety, though a small starter is usually about $20, but Ray often stocks these too. I have found that deshojo are hardier than the standard red Japanese maples too. Megumi Bennet and her husband from Bonsai Art in Terrey HIlls, doesn't recommend red maples too much either, stating that ordinary Japanese maples are better in the long term for numerous reasons.

Heya guys,
Thank you everyone for answering,
Marleey - sounds like a great little drive I could do on the weekend.
KC & Buddyman - I know where you are coming from, back when I was 16 and on the central coast I struggled with my then maples. Might go for a drive up north to check it out too.
Thinking Acer palmatum, might give both places a call/email.

That's a bit sad Ken. So far so good for me. Yes Joshua a lovely drive. The owner is a nice guy too and is used to people looking for trees to bonsai.. I bought a trident maple a few years back and only this year reduced the height and it has come back really well. Bought it also from Maple Springs. Hope you find your visit worthwhile as I did. Enjoy!

The other option is you find someone with a Palmatum maple that throws seeds and produces seedlings and you just dig them up with a mini spade. Go for a wander in your local area and see if there is a tree.

Hi Joshua
If you're after bonsai material, unfortunately I dont know of any growers or sellers.
However for full size red JMs, you might want to try Canley Vale nursery. They carry Inabe Shidare (good size weeping) and orangeloa amongst others.
Not in Sydney, but you could also try Yasmina Rare Plants who do mail out bare rooted JMs.
Some pics of my Shindeshojo.

Thank you so much guys. Just found a little beauty in bunnings of all places. Around four years old with an trunk that I can work with. Not leaving it's pot for a long time, lol.
