These are the open pot layers set last season

. With a lazy day on my hands  I decided to remove them

. I will pot them up tomorrow and set new layers on the numerous branches that have a bit of movement and character as soon as the weather warms up a bit . The trunks will get a work over with a saw and clamp and a few screws to create movement , taper and character .

Hi boom64 , mate i don't seem to be winning with Chinese elms as bonsai . These will go into pots and if someone is looking for a trunk then they will be sold off , until then they will be reduced and pot layering is the easiest way to do it .The trunks will be removed from the ground also .

Cheers . Alpine .

These Chinese Elms have had a bit of work done on then
P1120049.JPG
P1120048.JPG
these couple are still sitting idle in the ground awaiting some taper work , The open pot layers were removed some time back and planted into 300mm pots
P1120046.JPG
the root cuttings have been removed , trimmed and placed back into a re-worked grow bed
P1120047.JPG
. These were trampled by a couple of out of control dogs that were being minded , 50% of them were ripped out and chewed up by the mutts , definitely no more dog minding services offered to friends or family .

Cheers Alpineart

These Chinese elms needed a new home that took up less space
P1130153.JPG
a not so quick hack and chop and a bit of wire
P1130155.JPG
P1130157.JPG
they are ready to pot up . I have wired these into the pots due to the size and weight of the trunks
P1130160.JPG
don't want them to fall out after all the effort getting them to this stage . The root cuttings will be dug next as I need the grow bed space .

Cheers Alpineart

Hi boom64 , mate if I don't do it , it wont get done , like everything around here except the house work  I dug them root cutting tonight but ran out of day light .

There is a couple of good trunks in the mix , hope to find the time tomorrow to sort and pot some of them up . Another frost forecast so it won't be an early start .

Cheers . Alpine

These are the root cuttings straight from the grow bed

P1130165.JPG
P1130166.JPG
P1130167.JPG
P1130168.JPG
after a selective trim these are now ready for grow bags or pots

More than happy with the result , most of the reverse taper in the root itself has been alleviated the larger trunk will get some treatment and a new narebri developed just above the narrow sectionabove the existing root mass .
