Golden Zelkova

Post by iliya »

I fell in love with this tree in winter when i saw its leafless silhouette,
When i had the opportunity to buy it i jump on it!

Story goes -
It was styled/grown by an elderly man in the north coast of NSW who recently passed away.
First purchased from a bonsai nursery 25 years ago as pre-bonsai stock.
It was trained in the plastic grow tub for a few years and had been in a bonsai pot for the last 23 years.

I can wait to see it change colour in autumn and show off its ramification.

I'd also like to request a crisp macro shot of that bark!

From what I can see it looks amazing!
Although it is a bit blurry and not "tack sharp".

I've a young in comparison Zelkova - not golden to my knowledge.
Do they all bark up like this one?

Love this tree.

I'm still very interested in the bark?
Is this a characteristic of the Golden Zelkova only?
From what I see online I'm still confused as to why your bark is so gnarled.

If I would place some constructive critique I'd say that the Nebari could do with a bit of work to lift this tree to yet higher heights!

Cheers!

Thanks Mate,

I do not know much about this species - Maybe some of the more experienced guys can assist.
The branches too have very rough corky bark on most.
I will try and get some close up shots to highlight this.

Yes the Nebari will need to be improved/developed over time,
The roots needed some serious work at repotting.... I am unsure of when it was repotted prior to me.
My main objective it to let it recover and regain some vigour.... i am trying to get as much fine ramification on this one as possible.

I only have 1 and it is in the ground at the moment. (just lifted and replaced last week.

As far as I know, they should be treated same as a chinese elm. Mine always goes deciduous the same time as them ( in the ground too) and leafs out about the same time.

I've been trying to get a Zelcova. I've heard of a yellow Zelcova before. I just think they are a really nice specimen. Well done, what patience and skill too. :aussie:

Here is an update pic of this one.

The fine ramification is getting there slowly and may look at getting it into a slightly shallower pot next year.
