Re: Help Long internodes Maple forest
Well another spring and these four maples continue to give me grief:-( I think it's got something to do with light levels where it is placed but here's the picture for reference.
Will defoliate this summer ruthlessly and see where this goes.
The fifth tree I have in a grow pot has shot up and is putting on some girth that's probably a couple of years away though.

I had pinched all the new shoots as suggested last year of every bud but still have the same long internodes. Will defoliate this summer ruthlessly and see where this goes.

Re: Help Long internodes Maple forest
Some varieties of Japanese maple are just strong and do this each year. I also have a large JM bonsai with leaves that have matured large again despite pinching shoots very early and being in nearly full sun so far. I'll leave these for a few weeks to ahrden up and store some energy then defoliate and prune longer internodes and wait for a more restrained second flush.

Is this the right time to defoliate and cut the long internodes do you think?
