This is a Chinese elm i have ground grown for 4 years and then had it in a pot for a year after digging. It was planted at the size of a whip and trunk chopped a couple times in the ground. Here I have a photo before the latest work began

Then the other night I repotted, wired out the whole tree and then gave it its 1st style.

Now I will let it grow strong in its big container. Clip wire and shape it for the next couple of years. Even with a fast growing ground grown tree it will be at least ten years before it looks good. Lucky I'm only 35.

Also I made a you tube clip on this one. Search Aussie bonsai bloke and you should find it only if you want thanks. I sure do love this bonsai hobby. Lots of fun.

Yes I agree, has good prospects above ground, looks like a lamp post at ground level though at this stage. Does it have good nebari (surface roots)?, would make your work so much more worthwhile, I hope so.

Wow he looks pretty chunky, it must have enjoyed his time in the ground. I will check out your utube video and look to ward to future updates.
It is nice knowing we have many years for further development on our trees.
Hopefully some of my starters can bulk up like this soon.
Peace.
Xavier.

All the steps I took from the start if I can remember lol.

1. Bought from mitre ten as a 10 dollar straight stick

2. Kept it on my bench in small pot for a full summer.

3. Following year planted it in the ground 2012 or 2013 ?

4. Left it till 2015 and did big trunk chop plus put cow poo on.

5. 2016 dug it up and chopped back to a stump
Then put it in a pot left the second trunk and a leader. Also cut the roots back to almost nothing as they were straight and long. Then ring barked it for new roots to grow. (Ground layer almost. Those roots now have grown around the tree but need time to thicken up. So they have been covered and the waiting game begins. (Another 10 years and who know) :-).

6. Well that is where this post starts after a full summer of
Growth in the pot.
