Yellow spots on Ginkgo
As of late I've noticed more yellow spots on my Ginkgo.
It sits in full day sun and watered quite often as I hear they are thirsty in Spring, I showed photos at one of my 3 local nurserys and his advice was keep to morning sun and could be water logged.
This was only purchase 3 months ago and has had a lot of new growth.
Possibly 1 or 2 rounds of liquid fertiliser. I've only done it monthly so far and I'm due another round as soon as this rain stops in Sydney.
Appreciate any advice, I also know it needs a prune as leaves are massive atm, but happy to wait until I bring to class this week as they are the slowest of all trees and did not want to make any wrong cuts.
Just hope this isn't disease detrimental to the tree.

Forgot to add, previous owner said repot was due next season. Therefore I haven't seen how the roots are just yet.

Re: Yellow spots on Ginkgo
Look at the undersides of the leaves where the spots are. I suspect you've got something sucking on the leaf there... spray them off with hose, or wipe them off with soapy damp cloth..

I haven't much experience but I'm thinking it's got to be in the roots.melbrackstone wrote:Look at the undersides of the leaves where the spots are. I suspect you've got something sucking on the leaf there... spray them off with hose, or wipe them off with soapy damp cloth..
Nothing on the undersides Mel. Unless they've gone.

Re: Yellow spots on Ginkgo
Ginkgo are tough but slow and insect resistant.
The only thing they can suffer from is root problems(according to various websites) including nematodes and phytopthera.
If the tree is waterlogged then back off watering a bit but leave the tree untrimmed to help exercise the roots and soak up excess water.
Check roots and soil mix at earliest chance. Is it waterlogged? They are tough trees and would survive an out of season repot once leaves have hardened off. Protect after repot for a couple of weeks if you do.
My thoughts but always difficult without the tree in the flesh, so to speak.

Yellow spots on Ginkgo
True but what your leaves are doing is not seasonal yellowing. I took a look at mine this evening and the leaves look the same. I’ve been netting mine as I don’t want the possum to eat it but it’s since been out on the shelves and hasn’t been touched. My brown/yellow dots look a bit like the leaf surface has been damaged by something, like it’s been knocked by something. I don’t know what but I’m not concerned by it yet. It really looks the same as always to me. It’s still pushing new growth.banong wrote:Here I'm thinking they only change to yellow in autumn?Beano wrote:Looks ok to me.

That’s why I thought yours looked ok. Are they new leaves or slightly older, the ones that have spots?

Re: Yellow spots on Ginkgo
Did you get hail by any chance? We had hail here last week and while some of the leaves we torn some have bruises which look similar to what you have shown

Yellow spots on Ginkgo
I did! Yes that could be it. It was on the top shelf of my display so it would have been hit. The hail was pretty small so I guess that’s why the tree wasn’t shredded. Don’t know about banong, maybe the same happened?

Re: Yellow spots on Ginkgo
Thank you Grant will look at repotting this week and inspect the roots. I've done some light ready on nematodes and phytopthora and both have symptoms of yellow leaves.Grant Bowie wrote:Ginkgo are tough but slow and insect resistant.

No hail in Sydney gents. But we have had a few storms over the last week or 2.Beano wrote:I did! Yes that could be it. It was on the top shelf of my display so it would have been hit. Re: Yellow spots on Ginkgo
This is mine, looks similar. It’s been very windy here too, cold wind. Could just be the leaves getting battered in the wind

Re: Yellow spots on Ginkgo
Just an update - After bringing this tree to class we confirmed my Ginkgo suffered from leaf burn - I have relocated to position with morning sun and afternoon shade. It was also due for a prune, here's hoping I didn't cut back too hard.
