I like these deciduous trees in winter...that's when they're showing the true naked self posture. Love that frost snap.

Very nice trees, English Elms are one of my favourites. To bad I haven't been able to find any decent sized ones where I am!

Hi, thought I would post up a pic of my E. elm, bought this one from Bodhiharma around a year ago, was really happy with the size of the first flush foliage this year there was no need to defoliate.

Well how timely, Yesterday a neighbour popped in with this poor sad EE. No it is not yet dead -quite! It belonged to a 90 year old blind lady who has left her home for care and neighbour was supposed to care for her garden but missed this EE under a shrub and when she found it thought I may be able to care for it. It is still green when I cut a branch so I am simply soaking it in a Seasol bath for the moment and will repot it out of the aluminium dish later - if & when it reshoots. Any suggestions for care welcome.

Further to the above EE, I just had an email to say the elm has been in that aluminium dish for 50 years! Pressure is now on to make sure it outlives it's owner who has asked for progress reports.

Lots water , they love water .

Cow or chicken manure in mixture and it will grow like a weed once it starts shooting

Thank Meagi, I will feed it then.I thought maybe with no leaves it would overstress the roots but will give it a go. Here's hoping.

They do struggle once they get this far as do most but if you did have a chase it would be an elm I’d pick to bounce back .

I gave it a dose of "worm wee" yesterday and I notice that it is potted in local soil so it also needs a repot ( may never have had one in it's life???).I am guessing that I should wait to see if it recovers before stressing it any more. I will add some pelleted fertiliser in a few days...watching for shoots carefully- weather is cool at the moment so hoping that will help. Should I take it out of the sun on over 30 days until it recovers properly? Going to be 37 next Thursday and a couple of 30s either side of it.

I would keep it shaded and wet , every time I walk by mine on a hot day I give them a drink .

It should be ok to take it out of the pot and tease the roots a bit , it’s jan and you can work on them in January . Pick a cool day and don’t hack right into the roots .

As I said you got a 75/25 chance it will recover . Elms are pretty rezilant .

I dug 3 last week and chopped hard and they are starting to shoot already

OMG - you dug them last week? I was waiting until winter and every time I drive past them I get frustrated at the wait. Does that mean I can go get one now!!
OK thanks for that advice -I will place it under the shade of the Loquat tree I use as a potting shed.

Better success in August

But if your game and want a try jan is hit and miss .

If you look at the elm forest there should be lots yellow leaves on trees and on the ground meaning they are semi dormant.
