Acer Campestre - Field Maple

This was collected many moons ago and tossed in the ground

. I had a bit of a play years ago embedding a single straight trunk into the main trunk ,cos i could . It was trimmed once a year and left to grow on . With the last of the Terraces under way it had to be relocated to a new home . Early this morning I removed it and dropped it into a rather large Bonsai pot , slip potted from the ground to the pot , if it grows it grows .

With plenty of foliage there just may be a chance this can be transformed into a not so little bonsai in years to come . The base is butt ugly and with 1 sided roots it will be a challenge to create a nice tree out of it .

Anyway its out of the way of progress and it should survive .

Alpine this should air layer without too much effort . Yes the base is as pretty as a smashed crab so if the top is worth it airlayer it at some stage once its settled .

Hi Matthew , mate a smashed crab is better looking in my book , more like a Yowie's foot with his toes cut off
DSCN0112.JPG
.

I did take a few layers of about 10 years ago but they only had 1 sided roots as with this trunk . This time I will put it on a turntable and rotate it regularly hoping to stimulate a balanced root mass / It has 1 new shoot from the base this year so i will eventually approach graft some branches onto the lower smashed crab and create a clump style forest .

This is the embedded trunk/approach grafted trunk that i did many years ago
DSCN0113.JPG
, the thread graft is just above it , it was done 12 months later

The top has 4 reasonable good leaders as far as these maples go
DSCN0115.JPG
, I will layer the top off and if not satisfied I will layer the branches off for 4 trainers . I did sell 3 of the original layers quite a few years ago , just cant remember who bought them .

Cheers . Alpine

Hi Meagi , mate that's a nice little tree, I could manage a twin trunk using 1 of the branches , the original plan is to have a large broom

along this line and a clump forest

. Time will tell .

Needs a bit of root work hate the roots stick out of ground , Work in progress .

But theses are strong like the elms mate , but still hot sun shy like most maples .
