Crabapple Defoliation.

Post by Pearcy001 »

Hi all,

I have a shohin crabapple I was planning on defoliating.

I'm wanting to do it to try induce further ramification, especially for the branches closer to the trunk.

Just wanting to confirm CA respond to defoliation, and to make sure it's not too late in the season in Melbourne?

Thanks,
Pearcy.

I don't know about Crabs, but I defoliate Prunus cerasifera, with the same idea in mind. They are still mean with the ramification. I had one small branch that I had cut back 10 times, and it only made the one shoot each time. It's gone now...

Should be OK to do, but it's getting late, particularly to set flowers.

Thanks for the input Gavin.

No so worried about the flowers for now, always have next season for that. At the moment my bigger concern is setting the foundations and getting the branching right.

Cheers,
Pearcy.

Seems like it's ok for either full or partial defoliation on bonsai4me.

Now it's just a question of I'd it too late in the season. Maybe I just partially defoliate the areas I'm chasing the ramification?

Hi Pearcy, defoliated several CA two weeks ago. New growth several cm long now ,have picked up a few new branches. Looks like its going to take a long, long time seeing this is the third defoliation this season. Good luck if you go ahead. Cheers John.
