Another tree just finished after an initial working ! Really old Manchurian Pear, I bought from Andrew Edge as raw material in 2014. Spent the past 3-4 years gaining health and branching to work. Finally had a chance to design this guy this week. The dead wood I collaborated on with David Segal whom expertly brought out the best in the deadwood, cheers David!
Once again playing with a lot of asymmetry here to create an energy filled design, while taking the cues from natural deciduous design on an ancient form level, whils also responding to what the material offered up.

Great looking tree but does not go with a round pot.I too am a lover of round pots but this guy needs a rectangular or larger oval older pot to bring out the best in it.
To highlight and help i changed an E.E and it made a huge difference. See below.
Not pinching the thread but just how i see your tree, but we all see differently. :tu:

Hugh, really impressed and looks to have a great future.
Agree about the pot but I am confident that you are looking for a match for the upcoming potting season.

Defiantly not a final pot, merely a good size pot to develop the tree, now I have a solid design I’ll be in the look for a good pot!

hugh -excellent age and style - question--my manchurian pear has blackening of the tips on the older leaves-new leaves are fine -could it be under or over watering or water quality :lost:

Possibly a watering issue, more likely overwatering if the blackening is a discolouration, day if the papery black areas of too dry

thanks Hugh---has been ,during summer, in a water tray and under 50% shade cloth--will remove the tray and keep a close eye on it in this heat.

Did you see the pots Ryan Neil showed in the last video from BSOP? Would love it if some of our potters got into that sort of thing a little more....

Cubism for Bonsai?.....Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
These pots overpower - too deep, too sharp, too chunky - I hate 'em.

As a work of art? Sculpture?.....great!

Bonsai Pot?.....not for me! I can't imagine a tree strong enough to carry these pots.

Last year at Bonsai Week we saw some sculptural pots designed with bonsai in mind, (Ben Ho comes immediately to mind), hopefully we'll see some more this year.
