Curl grub killing

Hi,

I have seen some small curl grubs in my grow bed where I’m colander planting. Y current mix in colanders doesn’t have enough sharp rock type material in it and I’m worried they’ll get into the pots.

I’ve soaked one tree already, but how often do I have to do this to control them?

Has anyone tried the granule lawn grub killer on their pots, and has it caused any harm to the tree? Is granule ant killer the same? I’ve used any killer before without harm.

Thanks for any help. Swap one pest for another here!

The lawn grub killer should deal with curl grub in pots. I haven't needed to use it so can't comment on how much to add - try to follow the recommendations. Any systemic insecticide should deal with curl grubs but I note that Bunnings have taken Confidor and other Imacloprid products off the shelf so I'm not sure what other systemics are available.

I have some confidor tablets that I bought off eBay for our Lilly Pilly hedge that was full of psyllid. I could put some of those in the grow bed. Do they still need to eat the roots to die? Or is just the presence in the soil enough to kill them?

I couldn’t get the granules at our local non-Bunnings and we couldn’t be bothered going to Bunnings. I’m trying my ant killer granules. It’s got bifenthrin. Might work.

There is increasing evidence that the neonicotinoids are killing off our bees and there are moves to ban them https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-02639-1.

There are posts by Ken that indicate diatomite helps to keep them out of the pots. I generally add a bit to my mix and while I have found loads of curl grubs in our soil, none in any of my pots yet. Scoria is also available - PM me if you want details

I used to use scoria but it’s hard to get here at a suitable size. Many negative comments about diatomite so I’m not wanting to trial that. Have been using perlite for drainage and water retention instead as per Ray M. But forgot at the time of repotting that it wasn’t sharp edged. I now have some zeolite which should prevent them in my pots, but that will have to wait until it’s time to repot. So hence this poison thing is a temporary solution.

Hi Beano,
I had a case of curl grub in one of my Buxus Japonica pots last year. Couldn't work out why it was looking so crook till I did a repot. Have used the granular product now and no problems.
Cheers

Try as soil additives any / all of Akadama, Kanuma, Pumice, Diatomite, Zeolite in Quantities of 30% or more and you shod not see another grub in the pots
I have been using these for many years and have not seen a grub in my pots and I do not use any pesticides to control them.
