Reducing internode length on Japanese Maples

Post by Ryceman3 »

Found this posting on shortening internodes on a JM from Jonas. I don't have a lot of JM's ... but I know there are plenty on this site who do and I thought it might be useful for some to check out.
Jonas has some interesting stuff, well worth subscribing to his bonsai tonight newsletter if you haven't already.

Thanks for sharing R3 - interesting and insightful reading. Funny - just last night at the YVBS we were discussing styles and that you don’t see many Japanese Maple as semi/full cascade. Then you bang out this link with a semi-cascade Japanese Maple!

Cue Alanis Morisette... isn’t it ironic, don’t ya think!

Jonden has a really nice semi-cascade JM but it’s suffered some sunburn in the recent heat.
Hopefully he will read this and post a photo of it?

My Japanese Maple semi cascade, ( before damage ) unfortunately it has been slightly burnt in the recent heat wave. I used to have a brick tied to the end to keep it down as it naturally wants to grow up. I am undecided whether to defoliate in this uncertain weather as it would be prone to worse burning with the soft new foliage.
