Hi All,
Before I go ahead and probably do the wrong thing... I've been dreaming about making a Maple and Ginkgo forest (2 separate forest) for a long time and I really want to do it now... Is now a good time to do it and repot my young trees to form a forest? Is it safe or should I really have to wait till Spring???
Thanks!
Tad

I would not go near any of mine in NE Victoria yet . The weather is still TOO damn hot and its dry as hell here so unless you can provide the right conditions I would wait another several weeks but some people do repot deciduous in early autumn I just do mine late winter . Always have- always will.

Too early for me in Melbourne, i don' touch mine until late winter but i tend to play it very safe indeed

Ok then I won’t touch it till August, I’ve already taken too many risks last year and lost some trees...

It depends on where in Melbourne you are. I’m in Hawthorn and I will be repotting alot of my deciduous trees in the next couple of weeks. You can do deciduous trees now and also in the dormant winter period as buds thick but before bud burst.

Can you please explain Kirky, wouldn't you want the stored sugars to build before dormancy
Also
repot is only upsize pot i take it, or are you talking root prune and replace in same pot?

I’m in Coburg so same weather as hawthorn, but are you saying that you do root work and everything now with the tree still with full leaves without any issues?KIRKY wrote:It depends on where in Melbourne you are. Re: Repotting now to make maple and ginkgo forest
I have repotted trees at this time of year with no ill effects. Repot, root reduction, not potting up to another size same pot.
I have a lot of trees and find if I do some now it spreads the load. At this time of year it is still warm enough for roots to recover. Also our winters tend to be dry, the only reason not to repot now would be the risk of root rot in winter if we had a lot of rain for days, weeks on end. I find I still water trees during winter due to no rain so root rot is not an issue.
Cheers
