Suggestions for why desert Ash isn't thriving

Post by Rare plant Pat »

Hi everyone.

Thanks for a great forum - new to bonsai and my firstish post.

I bought a group of deciduous trees from a retiring collector. Just before bud burst I repotted all of them in the same mix after bare rooting and giving them all a comprehensive root prune. All but the ash jumped out of the pots. They are all in the same mix, same water and fertiliser - Osmocote plus weekly liquid feed.

The ash has not thrived. Buds have hardly opened, no stem elongation at all. Strangely good callus has formed on a pruning scar and the pot is full of healthy roots.

Any suggestions?

Looks fine. May be slow as it recovers from the repot.

Your tree looks healthy enough but it obviously hasn’t grown much. I’d say it’s recovering from the repot but next year it should bounce back, they’re tough trees.

What Steve and Matt said. :-)

And welcome to the Ausbonsai community - nice tree too!

Yep, I reckon your tree will flourish as it settles.

Thanks, I wondered if that was what was going to happen, but couldn't figure out why other trees had put on such good growth while this one was significantly different.

I had the same experience with my ash. I had also done major root pruning so am suspecting that’s it’s a result of the teee investing in roots first??
