Autumn 2019
A few cool nights and I'm getting some colour changes in a few of the deciduous trees at Shibui Bonsai.
One trident has already lost most of the leaves without much of a colour display but this trident group is looking good. My Ginkgo has also started to turn. Should get far more gold in the next week. More as the look good.
Feel free to add any of your 2019 autumn colour if you get any.

Re: Autumn 2019
Looking forward to Autumn as always, though my JMs got burned right at the end of summer so I’ll have to enjoy my other deciduous this year

Re: Autumn 2019
I was at the Weston Creek bonsai exhibition last weekend and took a photo of this Gleditsia triacanthos - Honey Locust because I hadn't seen one as bonsai before and it was in its autumn colour.

Super cute Watto!
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Re: Autumn 2019
Cheers Watto - this is an encouraging post - my neighbour has a Gleditsia tree - it’s beautiful. It is just turning golden now. It self-seeds near our clothes line and I have a few in training - this photo gives me hope that they are not a lost cause for bonsai.Watto wrote:I was at the Weston Creek bonsai exhibition last weekend and took a photo of this Gleditsia triacanthos - Honey Locust because I hadn't seen one as bonsai before and it was in its autumn colour.

Re: Autumn 2019
Since my bonsai seem to be actively resisting autumn at the moment, here are a couple of Japanese maples from around the garden that do understand autumn is here.
A weeping Atro getting some very nice colour this year.
My motherstok Shishigashira is just starting. The photo doesn't do it justice, the red is a real neon red it is that bright.

Re: Autumn 2019
Comparison between my two root-over-rock trident maples. One just a little further ahead than the other.
The more autumnal i only recently picked up, so there must be some extra elevation/ cooler temperatures between my place and the nursery i got it from.

Re: Autumn 2019
More trees responding to the cooler nights now. It seems to be mostly tridents so far. Some of the Japanese maples have just gone totally brown instead of making good colour, others still quite green so there's still some chance for those. I noticed a wisteria has gone gold today and the English elms have started to change. Just slight oranges on zelkova too.
This trident is actually a root over rock but the rock is quite small rounded river rock and the roots have all but engulfed it now And finally for today, another trident, this time with a more strongly twisted trunk. Branches and ramification still developing on this one, probably under 10 years from seed.

Re: Autumn 2019
Lovely colour and pot on your ginkgo Neil. And Tim, that maple you just picked up looks to have great potential - a tapering trunk to build some ramified branches upon. Good stuff.
