Spring 2022

Post by shibui »

Great time of the year when new leaves emerge on the deciduous trees.
Some medium size tridents:

The colours and texture of emerging leaves is often quite different from hardened leaves later in spring and summer.

Great trees ... though my daughter looks for an element that most of these trees seem to be missing, root over rock seems the main exception of ... "could I climb it?". Hehehe.

Great selection Neil!

Lovely to see them coming on to new life!. The 'could I climb it?' is actually a wise thought of how old and strong a tree seems, not to be dismissed as a way of judging how sturdy the tree seems. Just getting first buds unfurling on my maples, and soon to be time of sorting what to do with all them babies. A few I have already picked out as interesting, but most will just have a growing year.

I looked at the 'could I climb it' in relation to how hight the first branches are from ground level but it probably also encompasses how far apart the branches seem to be too. I suspect the multi trunk would be climbable if one could shimmy up the spaces between the trunks to reach the branches.

Maybe some of these would be more suitable for climbing?

Japanese maples are just starting to leaf out here so we can still see the branch structure

Spring 22 has pretty much passed here in Bayside Melbourne, so here are some photos of trees mostly fully leafed out already haha

Chinese Elm, this has already had one trim (1.25L tonic bottle for scale, the Gin is elsewhere ;) )

This is already just about needing leaf cutting despite very attentive pinching

My Shishigashira is almost ready for air-layering.

Image

I'm thinking of air-layering quite close to the top, as I'd like to get as many ~ 10-20cm trees out of this as possible

My main “working” benches / development area.

Daily watering going gangbusters.
