A Huge Privet

Post by Watto »

Just a quick pic of a privet I'm working on. Hope it is OK in a couple of years, but it is one of those privets that is all trunk (with a bit of carving - more to go yet) and not too much else. The only reason I posted this is because it is in flower.
Hope you appreciate, and I hope Mojo doesn't look!!!!

Its been a fair time between posts, but this has been developing nicely over the years. It has been re-potted a few times, fertilized and watered - just standard bonsai care really.
Here are a few photos of the flowering this year, hope you enjoy. It is difficult to get a good background with large material, and I apologise for the sun on the foliage, but it was time to give it a cut back...

Hey Watto...It's Huge...!!! Did you collect/dig it yourself...? Looks fantastic in flower...When I no longer consider myself a novice (20yrs+) I really hope that I'm working on material (& have in my collection) such as yours.

and large material it certainly is! A behemoth, but very nicely turned out. I like the full canopy you've developed there. Gives me some encouragement for a few of my stumps that need to hide under a decent canopy for the foreseeable until the primaries bulk up. I'f I can get this sort of canopy going they could be more pleasing on the eye in the meantime. Must be healthy as to flower like that - got to be proud of this one Watto!

Just better keep an eye on the shifty looking fella' in the last shot - he's got the look of a bloke who's just measured the tree and realised it will fit in the back of his car.....

This tree was dug locally quite a few years ago, I have some old photos and I'll see if I can post them over the weekend.
One thing about this bonsai is that it doesn't fit in any car, you need a van!
I'm 7ft 5in tall - honest. That's how big it is

Now there is a project to be envied Watto. Not really something to take to your local workshop for a quick trim though. Unless of course your job is a forklift driver.

Hi Watto,
Your title to this thread is an understatement. :o That is huge Watto. Looking very good, it would be great if you can find those earlier photos.
Thanks for posting.

Nice development Watto, this will make a nice feature tree one day. I am quite sure this would not fit in my van. I think you need a truck in order to fit both the tree and the forklift.
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

I appreciate that it is not a great bonsai, but it is a great talking piece and a feature.
I found some old photos from 2007, not the oldest ones, but these are when I first took it out of the wooden box and put it in its first bonsai pot. As you can imagine it is quite heavy and I use a chain block to re-pot.

Irish - I got this pot form Ray Nesci (I think) about 8 or 9 years ago. I was at Ray's a couple of months ago and he has some very nice looking real big pots there and I am thinking about another visit and probable purchase over the Christmas break. Might see you there?
