Do Photinia make good bonsai subjects?

Post by Ces »

Hey Guys,

My garden Photinia's needed a good trimming back and i thought, what the hell... I'll give a few air layers a try. I've never done it before and thought I might as well practice on these trees that i was going to cut back hard anyway.

But as I was doing the layers, I started to wonder if I could use the future trees as bonsai (the bug has bitten hard)

I had a bit of a google and searched on the forum but didn't find much, which tells me that the trees are probably not great bonsai subjects. But I am wondering if anyone out there has some Photinia bonsai or has seen a good example?

I dont have any pictures of the air layers, they're deep in the trees and my camera phone thinks its too dark :tounge: but i do have some of the foliage and flowers of the trees in my yard... maybe someone could help identify the species?

Yours is "robusta" i think and they can make a good tree if you can score a nice trunk. I had a nice one but sold it.
