You should be able to remove anything unwanted but be careful not to disturb the new roots by hacking at it.
I have repotted and prune by Buxus here in Sydney.

Cut paste is up to you, Many people like it (me) but others do not.

Hi Mel ....buds everywhere but they haven't opened, i would say in another 2 weeks or a month, they are all roughly about 3/4 mm

Hi Kc...that might be a problem because i'm going to have to use a saw, what's your opinion on branch selection? i mean because the branches grow in a ring, that's why i asked about jins, that way, in my way of thinking, i can have a live branch and a dead one/two in the same area, like one died and another sprouted. As to the paste thingy i might test out the aluminium foil thingy

Reason I asked was.... it's still not twelve months. ;)

Plus, in Tumut it's unlikely to be warming up much yet....

I may be completely wrong here, but I'd be waiting til the days are a fair bit warmer before chopping it back severely....

maybe just cut one out of every 3 for the moment, then do more chopping in Summer...

just my two cents.

Just get some mates to hold it still while u cut gently when ready

Jins are not really common on other trees but Juniper and pines. Deadwood and Uro are not unheard of though. Have a look at some pictures of Uro on the web if you can
I woud cut the main trunk off above the second set of branches and use the front / left branch there as the new apex / trunk line.
remove other branches in the wrong place (the left one might be on the inside of the curve that may have to be removed)

Cut branching back to bring the foliage in vloser to the trunk

Ken
ps that is when you are ready but IMHO you could trunk chop anytime you like

soz buddy....lol.

I'm not game to suggest a ground layer, that'd put everything back another year! :D

When it's time to repot, you will have a better idea of how you want to treat it, especially since you'll be able to see all the other roots when you're cleaning things up. It might be able to be carved into two, it might be better off just being chopped off and trying to grow some new ones from that spot...

If you really want to do some pruning you could nip into the green shed and grab some nursery stock to play with?

Since it's been done now, I would also cull the top section of the trunk above the high left branch which rises almost vertically. That branch can become the new leader.

The section I'm referring to is a little more orange in colour in the photo than the rest of the tree.

Keep us updated.

Hi Granite.... i was/am going to keep that, i peeled the cambium back to the branch you mentioned. My way of thinking is, that will be the height of the tree ( nearly, i'd want the dead section to be just poking thru the top canopy) by the time (4-5years) of cut back grow etc. Eventually it should be 480 high by about 600, this will give me about 90 mm of visible dead would to play with.....if it lives :palm:
but if you guys and gals think i should chop it....tears will flow but it shall be done  8-)

How are ya's? Just a question
Where shall i keep the tree?
It currently sits around the side of the house and gets about 2-3 hours of full sun

The more sun it gets at this time of year the faster it'll grow, however it'll also need water and fertiliser to help maintain that growth... pretty much the trinity of growing, really. :)

Cheers Mel :worship: She's out in full sun, two buds have formed on the trunk a heap are shooting off the base, should i remove those?
The tall section that i left and scraped with a knife has 5 shoots forming, i obviously didn't remove ALL the cambium but bugga me :palm: there surely can't be that much energy feeding the top. No buds forming along the branches tho which has me a little worried :lost:
