Defoliate my Cork Oak

Post by ric »

IMG_0052-001.JPG
For the second year in a row I have completely taken all the leaves off my Quercus suber to help to do two things.
Firstly to increase the amount of twigs on each branch with the idea that this will allow it to carry more leaves so letting the thickness increase -in proportion to the very heavy, thick trunk.
The second one is the usual aim of this exercise which is to get a fresh new crop of smaller leaves. Here is a photo after an Australia Day spent clipping away fora few hours

Wow Ric,

That's one beautiful big Oak.
What technique do you use for repot / root prune?
Thanks for posting, i'd love to see it in leaf too.

Thanks Bodi and all who have said kind words. I will ask Leigh if he eould be interested in taking good quality photos --even maybe 360 degree? but as a follow up- from totally bare to it's new crop of leaves ??I say that because at this time the tree is on display at the NBPCA's beautiful and unique open air Gallery Canberra and he did a few beautiful ones even my Red pine in that style and you can see them if you look down the menu here.

Wonderful, thanks Ric  Really glad we got the size comparison in the first photo as the better photo does not show the size. A great tree.

Just about a month has gone by and here is my tree back in even more luxuriant leaf. I'm told that its kind carers have even had to trim back the more exuberant shoots!
