Olea Europaea "Manzanillo"

Post by quodlibet_ens »

This was originally an olive tree I had bought to produce olive about 6 years ago. I had neglected it for about 4 of those years, leaving it in a pot and never watering or feeding it. I decided to I would give it some love and a new life as a bonsai. Currently the trunk is about 100mm and the tree is 200mm tall overall. I thought that it might look okay as a mame sized bonsai, but now I'm questioning that idea and I'm not quite sure where to go from here.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I'd give it a couple of years of love and attention and see if you can fatten the base and get rid of the reverse taper....

I was thinking of layering up to the reverse taper to try and create some nebari.

worth a try, if you've got enough room to fit the air layer in. :)

My guess is that the widest part is the real base of the tree. Below that is actually exposed root.
Layer this with a ground layer - ringbark as usual but then bury the bared area with extra mix or moss. Cut a ring of plastic pot if you need to hold the extra mix a bit higher to cover the cut area. Keep it well watered until roots appear.
