Field Growing Junipers

Post by one_bonsai »

Do I need to do any root work before planting in the ground?

Hi,

Melbourne has a range of climates depending on where you are.

You might need to give some more information - eg; what side of town you live in, what stage your junipers are at, what you are trying to achieve etc.

You might get better answers.

While it is desirable to have good nebari on any bonsai, junipers are one of the trees that the Japanese don't seem to get obsessed with roots on juniper bonsai. I suspect that is partly because they have worked so extensively with collected trees where you don't get a choice but probably also because natural wild junipers don't seem to show the roots as much as many deciduous trees.
It is possible to correct roots after the tree is grown but I find it far easier and quicker in the long run to sort out roots right at the start. There's no one 'right' way to do this, just a range of possibilities so it will be up to you whether to delay planting in order to correct roots or start growing and :fc: hope for a good result.

Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The juniper is at pre-bonsai stage. I'm trying to thicken the trunk and get some taper.
